SOUTER LIGHTHOUSE

Situated on the bluffs above the Durham coast just north of Sunderland, Souter was the first lighthouse in the world to be actually designed and built specifically to use alternating electric current, the most advanced lighthouse technology of its day.

Opened in 1871, it operated for over a century until it was decommissioned in 1988.
